The “C” Word: COURAGE

“Yoga makes you stronger in mind and body; gives courage, hope and confidence; breaks down barriers of isolation and stigma; and can be a great way to relax.” -Tari Prinster

A diagnosis of cancer is terrifying. In an instant, it changes your entire reality. It can leave you feeling overwhelmed, lonely and frightened. Yoga can give you back the feeling of control over yourself. Cancer and the treatments it requires will change your life. While courage may be the furthest thing from your mind when faced with cancer, it is possible to take this as an opportunity to face your fears and start exploring new ways to take care of yourself.

If courage means mental strength to resist opposition, danger, or hardship, then yoga will help you cultivate it. The practice of yoga brings a sense of control to your physical body but also to your mind. The ability to calm restless thoughts will not only relieve anxiety, but open your mind up to the ability to listen and pay attention to what it going on inside of your body. Yoga can help you move past feelings of betrayal by your own body and over time; it will make you feel stronger and capable. Setting aside this time to stretch, be still and be a part of a community that understands what you are going through will help you cultivate the strength you need to access the courage that is already inside.
